The United Kingdom left the EU on 31 January 2020. During the period from 1 February 2020 to 31 December 2020, known as the implementation period or transition period, EU law continued to apply in the UK.
EU Candidate Countries
There are five EU candidate countries. These are countries that are already in the process of incorporating EU legislation into national law.
- Albania
- Montenegro
- North-Macedonia
- Serbia
- Türkiye
Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo are potential candidates. These are countries that do not yet meet the conditions for EU membership.
List of European Economic Area (EEA) Countries
The European Economic Area (EEA) was established via the Agreement on the European Economic Area, an international agreement which enables the extension of the European Union’s single market to member states of the European Free Trade Association.
The EEA links the EU member states and three EFTA states (Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway) into an internal market governed by the same basic rules. These rules aim to enable free movement of persons, goods, services, and capital within the European single market, including the freedom to choose residence in any country within this area.
The EEA was established on 1 January 1994 upon entry into force of the EEA Agreement. The contracting parties are the EU, its member states, and Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.
The EEA Treaty is a commercial treaty and differs from the EU Treaties in certain key respects. According to Article 1 its purpose is to “promote a continuous and balanced strengthening of trade and economic relation”. The EFTA members do not participate in the Common Agricultural Policy or the Common Fisheries Policy.

The United Kingdom left the EEA when it left the EU on 31 January 2020.
Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway are EEA member states, but they are not members of the European Union (EU).
Switzerland is not a member of the EU or the EEA. However, Swiss nationals have rights which are similar to those of nationals of EEA countries.
United Kingdom EEA Countries Iceland Lichtenstein Norway Switzerland is a member of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). It took part in negotiating the European Economic Area (EEA) agreement with the European Union. It signed the agreement on 2 May 1992, and submitted an application for accession to the EU on 20 May 1992.
