General University of California Minimum Admission Requirements
UC’s minimum admission requirements represent exactly that — the minimum academic standards students must attain to be considered for admission. However — and this is important for your students to understand — meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to a particular campus.
Often, admission to our campuses and/or programs is extremely competitive and requires students to satisfy far more demanding standards.
Subject requirement
Freshman applicants will be required to complete a minimum of 15 yearlong A-G courses with a letter grade of C or better in grades 9-12. Seven of these courses must be taken in the last two years of high school. Students must complete:

Eleven A-G courses must be completed prior to the 12th grade/last year of high school/secondary school. No particular course pattern is required for this review.
A specific 11-course pattern is required for consideration in UC’s Eligibility in the Local Context (ELC) program and must be completed prior to the beginning of 12th grade. Courses completed during summer after 11th grade will be considered.
Although a minimum of 11 courses are required for admissions consideration, completion of at least the full 15 yearlong college-preparatory required courses will be expected of all students by the end of their senior year.
Applicants should also be reminded that admission to the University of California is competitive, and most applicants present more than the minimum requirements when applying for admission.
For example, students offered admission for the fall 2020 term completed between 23-28 yearlong courses, or a mean of 56 semester courses.
To be considered for admission, students must complete 15 A-G courses with a letter grade of C or better — at least 11 of them prior to the last year of high school.
Taking approved A-G courses isn’t the only way to satisfy these requirements. Students also may meet them by completing college courses or earning certain scores on various acceptable exams.
Some courses in mathematics and language other than English completed in grades 7 and 8 may be counted toward the 11 courses. Middle school courses must be comparable in content to courses offered at the high school level. Typically, middle school coursework is validated by higher-level coursework completed in high school.
For example, an intermediate algebra course completed in high school with a grade of C or higher will validate beginning algebra taken in seventh or eighth grade. Likewise, a Spanish 2 course completed with a grade of C or higher will validate Spanish 1 completed prior to high school.
Academic courses completed in the summer after 11th grade also may be used to complete the 11 courses required for admission consideration.

An SAT Writing and Language score of 31 satisfies the first three years of the requirement.
An SAT Writing and Language score of 36 satisfies the entire requirement.
ACT with Writing
English Language Arts (ELA) score of 24 satisfies first three years; score of 30 satisfies entire requirement.
SAT Subject Test
Literature: Score of 560 satisfies first three years.
AP or IB examination
Score of 3, 4 or 5 on the AP English Language and Composition or English Literature and Composition Exam; score of 5, 6 or 7 on the IB HL English: Literature exam (formerly IB HL English A1)
College courses
For each year required through the 11th grade, a grade of C or better in a non-transferable college course of 3 or more semester (4 or more quarter) units in English composition, literature (American or English) or foreign literature in translation. Courses used to satisfy the fourth year and/or the entire requirement must be transferable. For lower-division transfer, all courses must be transferable. Literature courses must include substantial work in composition.
C) Mathematics
UC-approved high school courses
Three years of college-preparatory mathematics that include the topics covered in elementary and advanced algebra and two- and three-dimensional geometry. A geometry course or an integrated math course with a sufficient amount of geometry content must be completed.
Approved integrated math courses may be used to fulfill part or all of this requirement, as may math courses taken in the seventh and eighth grades if the high school accepts them as equivalent to its own courses; also acceptable are courses that address the previously mentioned content areas and include or integrate probability, statistics or trigonometry.
Courses intended for 11th and/or 12th grade levels may satisfy the required third year or recommended fourth year of the subject requirement if approved as an advanced math course.
SAT Subject Test
Math Level 1: Score of 570 satisfies the two years of required elementary and advanced algebra.
Math Level 2: Score of 480 satisfies the two years of required elementary and advanced algebra.
NOTE: All students must complete a geometry course or integrated math with geometry content; no standardized examination will satisfy the geometry requirement.
AP or IB examination
Score of 3, 4 or 5 on the AP Statistics Exam satisfies elementary and intermediate algebra.
Score of 3, 4 or 5 on the AP Calculus AB or Calculus BC Exam satisfies two years of the requirement (but not geometry).
Score of 5, 6, or 7 on the IB Mathematics HL exam satisfies two years of the requirement (but not geometry).
NOTE: All students must complete a geometry course or integrated math with geometry content; neither AP Calculus AB/BC nor IB HL Mathematics exam will satisfy the geometry requirement.
College courses
Grade of C or better in a non UC-transferable course of 3 semester (or 4 quarter units) in elementary algebra, geometry, or intermediate/advanced algebra can satisfy the requirement as follows:
- elementary algebra and/or geometry each satisfy one year of the math requirement;
- intermediate algebra satisfies the two years of algebra requirement.
Grade of C or better in a UC-transferable mathematics course of 3 semester (or 4 quarter) units that has intermediate algebra as a prerequisite satisfies two years of the requirement (but not geometry).
NOTE: All students must complete a geometry course or integrated math with geometry content; one transferable college course will not satisfy the full three-year math requirement.
D) Science
UC-approved high school courses
Two years of college-preparatory science, including or integrating topics that provide fundamental knowledge in two of these three subjects: biology, chemistry, or physics. One year of approved interdisciplinary or earth and space sciences coursework can meet one year of the requirement. Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Science courses can be used in area D as an additional science (i.e., third year and beyond).

Two years, or equivalent to the 2nd level of high school instruction, of the same language other than English are required. (Three years/3rd level of high school instruction recommended). Courses should emphasize speaking and understanding, and include instruction in grammar, vocabulary, reading, composition and culture. American Sign Language and classical languages, such as Latin and Greek, are acceptable, as are Native American languages. Courses taken in the seventh and eighth grades may be used to fulfill part or all of this requirement if the high school accepts them as equivalent to its own courses.

Scholarship requirement
In order to be considered for admission, applicants must have earned a minimum GPA of 3.0 (3.4 for nonresidents) in all A-G courses completed in grades 10 and 11, with no grade lower than a C. We award extra grade points for grades received in approved honors-level courses to a maximum of eight semesters, including no more than four semesters taken in the 10th grade.
High school proficiency examination
If students do not have a high school diploma, we will accept the Certificate of Proficiency awarded by the State Board of Education upon successful completion of the California High School Proficiency Examination. We’ll also accept proficiency examinations from other states, and the General Education Development (GED) Certificate, in place of a diploma.
However, students must still meet the subject and GPA requirements.
