UNIZIK Admission Requirements for 2022/2023 Academic Session

Before you for undergraduate admission into the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU/UNIZIK) for the 2022/2023 academic session, it is expected that you take the admission requirements for any of your chosen courses of study.

Faculty of Agriculture

Agricultural Economics and Extension Programmes

UTME CANDIDATES
For a candidate to be admitted into the first degree programme of the Department, he/she must have the Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or its equivalent with credit level passes in at least five (5) subjects which include: English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Biology at not more than two sittings.

The candidate must also earn an acceptable score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). Pass in Mathematics, may be considered if the candidate has a credit in Physics or vice versa. The credit pass in Agricultural Science must be backed up with at least a pass in Biology.

DIRECT ENTRY CANDIDATES

In addition to the specified qualification for UTME entry mode, candidates seeking admission through direct entry mode must possess one of the following qualifications:

Higher School Certificate (HSC) or General Certificate of Education Advanced Level (GCE A/L) or its equivalent passes in Chemistry and in at least one science or social/ management science subjects like Biology, Botany, Zoology, Agricultural Science, Physics, Geology, Economics and Geography.

National Diploma or Higher National Diploma (OND/HND) obtained in relevant fields of Agriculture, Fisheries, Forestry, Wildlife, Cooperative and Agribusiness Management or Veterinary Science with a minimum of Upper credit.

National Certificate of Education (NCE) pass with a minimum of credit grade (60-69%) obtained from College of Education recognized by the University and with relevant subject combinations from among Agricultural Science, Biology, Botany, Zoology, Chemistry and Home Economics.

Candidates for the direct entry program will be admitted into the 200level.

TRANSFER

Any student of the University can seek transfer into the department after at least one academic year in the University provided they offered almost similar courses with the intended department.

A candidate for transfer shall have a CGPA of not less than 2.50 and must satisfy other departmental requirements.

Crop Science and Horticulture Programmes

Admission Requirements and duration of programme

For UTME entry candidates (5 years programme)

The University Matriculation Examination (UME) subjects include English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology/Agricultural Science.

To qualify for admission into the 5 years programme of  B. Agric. (Crop Science and Horticulture), candidates must have credit passes in 5 WAEC/GCE/NECO subjects to include English, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biology/Agriculture Science.

Pass in Mathematics, may be considered if the candidate has a credit in Physics or vice versa. 

The 5 credits must be obtained in not more than two sittings. A credit pass in Agricultural Science must be backed up at least with a pass in Biology.

Aside attaining the approved UME (UTME) minimum score, the candidate must score the required post-UTME of the University.

For Direct Entry (4 years programme)

Direct entry students must possess HSC or GCE A/L in Chemistry and any of the following subjects, Biology, Botany, Zoology, Agricultural Science and at least 5 credits at WAEC /GCE/NECO at O/ level.

Candidates with HD/HND/NCE in Agricultural disciplines are also eligible for direct entry admission. Candidates for the four year direct entry programme will be admitted into the 200 level.

Degree Requirements

To be eligible for a B. Agric. Degree in Crop Science and Horticulture in the Faculty of Agriculture, a candidate must successfully complete the following;

  1. University common courses
  2. Inter- and intra-Faculty courses
  3. Departmental courses
  4. One full year of practical training in the penultimate year in the University or an approved farm or agricultural establishment.
  5.  Satisfactory completion and defense of research oriented project work.

 Admission by Inter-University transfer

Inter-University transfer admission into the Nnamdi Azikiwe Univeristy shall only be allowed in exceptional circumstances to be determined by the University Admission Committee.

Where the committee decides that it is necessary to accept a candidate on inter-University transfer, such a candidate who must be in good academic standing and has spent at least one academic year in a recognized University, may apply for transfer to continue with his current programme of study or transfer into a new one.

Transfer shall not be allowed into the first or final year of any programme.

A candidate requesting transfer shall:

  1. Meet the necessary requirements as contained in both the general entry requirements and the Faculty/Departmental requirements.
  2. Satisfy Faculty/Departmental requirements.
  3. Return a completed transfer form, obtained from the Registrar at the prescribed fee.
  4. Ensure that the Registrar of his/her current University forwards his/her full transcript to Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

All completed transfer forms shall be processed by the Dean of the Faculty and the Head of Department to determine appropriate course of study, waiver, year of study and the year of admission.

The results of (v) above shall be presented to the Admission Committee of Senate for consideration and approval

If admitted the student shall:

  1. Earn waivers for only those relevant courses passed in his/her previous University.
  2. Receive a formal letter of transfer/admission from the Registrar stating the Department, the programme into which admitted, waivers granted, the year of study and the session the candidate shall be registered in.

All transfers shall be completed before the registration of each academic session.

Deferment of Admission

  1. Candidates to be considered for deferment of admission shall be only those candidates admitted through of UME or Direct Entry.
  2. Applications to JAMB for deferment of admission shall be copied to the Registrar, Nnamdi Azikiwe University and shall be made within first two (2) weeks of the session.

Department of Food Science and Technology Programmes

Admission requirements and duration of programme

  1. For UME entry candidates (5 years programme):

To qualify for admission into the 5 years programme of B.Sc. Food Science and Technology, candidates must have credit passes in 5 WAEC/GCE/NECO subjects to include English language, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biology/Agriculture Science. Pass in Mathematics, may be considered if the candidate has a credit in Physics or vice versa. 

The 5 credits must be obtained in not more than two sittings. Aside attaining the approved UME (UTME) minimum score, the candidate must score the required post-UTME of the University.

  • For Direct Entry (4 years programme)

Direct entry students must possess HSC or GCE A/L in Chemistry and any of the following subjects, Biology, Botany, Zoology, Agricultural Science and at least 5 credits at WAEC /GCE/NECO at O/level subjects: English language, Chemistry, Biology or Agricultural Science, Mathematics and Physics.

Candidates with ND/HND/NCE in Food Science and Technology, and related disciplines like Science Laboratory Technology and Chemical Engineering, etc. are also eligible for direct entry admission.

Advanced General Certificate of Education level passes in English language, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics are acceptable.

Candidates for the four year direct entry programme will be admitted into the 200 level.

 Degree Requirements

To be eligible for a B.Sc. Degree in Food Science and Technology in the Faculty of Agriculture, a candidate must successfully complete the following;

(i) University common courses

(ii) Inter- and intra-Faculty courses

(iii) Departmental courses

(iv) six months Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES)

(v) Satisfactory completion and defense of research oriented project work.

 Admission by Inter-University Transfer

  • Inter-University transfer admission into the NnamdiAzikiweUniveristy shall only be allowed in exceptional circumstances to be determined by the University Admission Committee.
  • Where the committee decides that it is necessary to accept a candidate on inter-University transfer, such a candidate who must be in good academic standing and has spent at least one academic year in a recognized University, may apply for transfer to continue with his current programme of study or transfer into a new one.
  • Transfer shall not be allowed into the first or final year of any programme.

  1. Must have been duly admitted and possess valid Admission Letter from JAMB.

  5. Ensure that the Registrar of his/her current University forwards his/her full transcript to NnamdiAzikiwe University, Awka.
  6. Pay the necessary prescribed fee for verification of his/her certificates and transcript.
  7. Successfully undergo verification of the certificates and transcripts.
  8. All completed transfer forms shall be processed by the Dean of the Faculty and the Head of Department to determine appropriate course of study, waiver, year of study and the year of admission.
  9. The results of (iv) above shall be presented to the Admission Committee of Senate for consideration and approval
  10. If admitted the student shall:
  11. Earn waivers for only those relevant courses passed in his/her previous University.
  12. Receive a formal letter of transfer/admission from the Registrar stating the department, the programme into which admitted, waivers granted, the year of study and the session the candidate shall be registered in.
  13. All transfers shall be completed before the registration week of each academic session.

Deferment of Admission

  1. Candidates to be considered for deferment of admission shall be only those candidates admitted through UME or Direct Entry.
  2. All such candidates must have completed the registration formalities and paid the prescribed school fees for the session.
  3. Applications to JAMB for deferment of admission shall be copied to the Registrar, NnamdiAzikiwe University and shall be made within first two (2) weeks of the session.
  4. All such applicants shall be presented to Senate for approval.
  5. The Registrar shall convey Senate approval to the candidate.
  6. Deferment shall be for a period of one academic year.

Department of Soil Science and Land Resources Management

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

For UTME Candidates (5 Years)

For a candidate to be admitted into the first degree programme (B.Agric. in Soil Science), he/she must have the Senior Secondary School Certificate or its equivalent with credit level passes in five (5) subjects viz: English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and Agriculture/Biology at not more than two sittings.

The candidate must also earn an acceptable score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination UTME. Aside attaining the approved UME (UTME) minimum score, the candidate must score the required post-UTME of the University.

Direct Entry Candidates (4 years programme):

In addition to the specified qualification for UTME entry mode, candidates seeking admission through direct entry must possess one of the following qualifications:

  • Higher School Certificate (HSC) or general certificate of education advanced level (GCE A/L) or its equivalent passes in Chemistry and in at least one science or social/ management science subjects like Botany, Zoology, Agricultural Science, Physics, Geology, Economics and Geography.
  • National Diploma (OND/HND) obtained in relevant fields of Agriculture, Fisheries, Wildlife, Forestry, Cooperative and Agribusiness Management or Veterinary Science with a minimum of upper credit.
  • National Certificate of Education (NCE) pass with a minimum of credit grade (60 to 69) obtained from a college of Education recognized by the university with relevant subject combinations from among Agricultural Science, Biology, Botany, Zoology, Chemistry and Economics.
  • Candidates for the four year direct entry programme will be admitted into the 200 level.

A candidate is allowed to transfer into the Faculty only at 200 level having satisfied the UTME entry requirement and has not been withdrawn from any University.

Transfer shall not be allowed into the first or final year of any programme.

A candidate requesting transfer shall:

  1. Meet the necessary requirements as contained in both the general entry requirements and the Faculty/Departmental requirements.
  2. Satisfy Faculty/Departmental requirements.
  3. Return a completed transfer form, obtained from the Registrar at the prescribed fee.

Programme Structure

Programme/discipline structure to include period of formal studies in the Universities Industrial Training, planned visit and project :

The B. Agric programme is a 5 years degree programme for UTME Candidates and 4 years for direct entry students with options in Agricultural Economics and Extension, Animal Science/ Fisheries and Aquaculture, Crop Science and Horticulture and Soil Science and Land Resources Management.

The university Academic Session runs for two 15 weeks semester (Harmathan and Rain). The students are exposed to general science courses in their first year, expose to different specialization in Agriculture in their 2nd and 3rd year. They are given appropriate laboratory exposure in relevant courses.

The student must go for 6 months Industrial Training (IT) in 4th year. The students are expected to undertake literature research, write up and present seminar on any chosen topic in Agriculture as selected by the student under the supervision of a relevant academic staff.

Each student is expected to do a research project selected on the basis of the student interest and supervised by an academic staff, which may involve field, laboratory and library studies. The research findings are expected to be presented in dissertation by every student at their 500 level.

Department of Fishries and Aquaculture

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT AND CURRICULUM

Undergraduate Admission/Graduation Requirements

Entry Requirements

UTME Candidate (5 Years Program):

For a candidate to be admitted into the B.Fisheries/B.Agric. (Fisheries)  programme of the department he or she must have Credit Passes in 5 WASSCE/GCE/NECO Subjects including English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science, at least a pass in Physics at not more than two sittings..

The Credit pass in Agricultural Science must be backed up by at least a pass in Biology.

The candidate must also earn an acceptable score in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) with Subject combination of English, Mathematics/Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural science.

Direct Entry Candidate (4 Years Program):

In addition to the specified qualification for UTME entry mode, candidates seeking admission through direct entry mode must possess one of the following qualifications:

Programme Structure

Programme/discipline structure to include period of formal studies in the Universities Industrial Training, planned visit and project:  The B. Agric programme is a 5-year degree programme for UTME candidates and 4 year for direct entry students with options in agricultural economics and extension, animal science/ fisheries and aquaculture, crop science and horticulture and soil science and land resources management.

The university academic session runs for two 15 weeks semester (harmathan and rain). The students are exposed to general science courses in their first year, exposed to the different specialization in agriculture in 2 and 3 year.

They are given appropriate laboratory exposure in the relevant courses while the fourth year should be basically left for practical farm training. This training should be for duration of 12 months of which not less than 80% should be devoted to practical training on a farm and related industries. 

Each student is expected to do a research project selected on the basis of the student’s interest and supervised by an academic staff, which may involve field, laboratory and library studies.

The research findings are expected to be presented in a dissertation by every student at their 500 level.

Graduation Requirements

To graduate, a student shall have undergone 4 or 5 years of study depending on his entry point, including one practical year of 12 months.

The activities of the practical year should include periodic seminars on the student’s work as a way of stimulating interest as well as the presentation of a written report to be graded at the end of the year.

Course workload must meet the graduation requirements of the University. However, in doing so, the student must earn a minimum of 167 credit units for the five year programme and 132 credit units for the four year (direct entry) programme in Agriculture and related fields as indicated under course requirements.

The submission of an undergraduate project thesis based on supervised research is a graduation requirement, which must not be compromised. This requirement exposes the student to problem-solving techniques and provides him with an ability to organize ideas from literature and research findings.

In short, it prepares the student for the work ahead and for further training at the postgraduate level. This area of academic preparation needs to be maintained and developed further.

 Award of Degree/Diplomas

Degrees/Diplomas of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka shall be awarded to candidates who by authority of the senate, have been found worthy in character and in learning for the award of such degrees/diploma.

To be found worthy in learning, a candidate must have successfully completed and passed all the prescribed examinations and courses of instruction required for such degree/diploma, within the stipulated time, or as the senate may otherwise prescribe.

Students who have been found involved in cases of gross misconduct such as (but limited to) examination malpractice, convened felony or other cases of criminal offence, association with or membership of secret cults or organization proscribed by the University or the Government, shall by the authority of the Senate, not be worthy in character for the award of a degree/diploma of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

Department of Animal Science and Technology

 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS 

UTME Candidates (5 Years Programme):

The UME subjects are English Language, Mathematics/ Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Agricultural Science or Animal Production.

To be admitted into the 5 years program of B. Agriculture (Animal Science and Technology), candidates must have credit passes in 5 WAEC/GCE/NECO subjects to include English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Agriculture Science.

Pass in Mathematics, may be considered if the candidate has a credit in Physics or vice versa.  The 5 credits must be obtained in not more two sittings. The credit pass in Agricultural Science must be backed up with at least a pass in Biology

Direct Entry Candidates (4 Years Programme):

Students who have been found involved in cases of gross misconduct such as (but limited to) examination malpractice, convened felony or other cases of criminal offences, association with or membership of secret cults or organization proscribed by the University or the Government, shall by the authority of the Senate, not be worthy in character for the award of a degree of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka.

Faculty Basic Medical Science

ADMISSION INTO REGULAR UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME IN THE FACULTY

Admission Through UTME

Applicants who have sat for the UME may be admitted into the 1st year degree programme if:

  1. They attain the approved UME minimum score which shall normally not be less than 50% of the maximum possible score. UME combination subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and English.
  2. By the 1ST day of October of the year of admission, they possess at least one of the following qualifications:

a) The Senior Secondary School Certificate with at least credit level passes in the following five (5) subjects      namely English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at not more than two (2) sittings.

b) WASC/ GCE O-level or NECO with at least credit level passes in the following five (5) subjects namely: English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at not more than two (2) sittings.

Admission by Direct Entry

Applicants for admission by direct entry shall:

  1. Meet the requirements in 4. 1 above
  2. meet at least one of the following conditions:

 HSC / GCE A level passes in Physics, Chemistry, Biology (or Zoology)

ND certificate with minimum of upper credit, provided that the programme covers most of the basic courses offered in the faculty up to 2nd

NCE or equivalent with passes at the credit / merit level in at least two major relevant subjects.

Sc. Degree or equivalent in related science discipline.

Any other qualification approved by the concerned department and ratified by the Senate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

 Admission from Pre-Science Programme

Candidates who have successfully complete the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Pre –science programme and satisfied all the stipulated conditions / requirements may be admitted into the first year degree programme in faculty of Basic Medical Sciences.

Admission By Inter-Departmental Inter Faculty Transfer

This may be possible following proper application to the Register and meeting up with the stipulated condition in the GAR. Usually transfer forms obtainable from the Registrar’s office shall be completed by the candidate wishing to transfer.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  1. UME ENTRY

As in the general standards prepared by the NUC, UME candidates would possess 5-credit level passes (including English and Mathematics) in the senior secondary school certificate or its equivalent, in addition to acceptable pass in the UME. This admits them to a standard four-year programme of universities.

  • DIRECT ENTRY:

Applicants would join the programme at the 200 level. They would possess any of the following qualifications in addition to the basic university admission requirements of the subject area departments whose courses would be considered as restricted electives.

Two (2) passes in relevant subject areas at advanced level, with SC/GCE “O” level credit passes in 5 subjects at not more than two sittings, OR

A two-year diploma of a recognized institution in Nigeria or overseas with pass level not below merit.

At least a merit pass in two major subjects in relevant areas at NCE with G.C.E “O” level credits or equivalent in 5 other subject areas. Education is accepted as a third A-level subject.

Admission Programmes requirements for Undergraduate students

Currently, there are two operational programmes in the department:

  1. Technical/Technology Education
  2. Business Education

Recently, senate had given approval for Agricultural Science and Home Economics Education programmes in the department; they will take off in due course.

Admission Requirements

  1. Technical/Technology Education Programme

Options:

i. Building/Woodwork Technology

ii.Electrical/Electronics Technology

iii. Mechanical/Automobile Technology

Candidates should possess any of the following:

  1. Credit level passes in five (5) subjects at the Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSSC), NECO, NABTEB or any other equivalent at not more than two sittings.
  2. Teachers Grade II certificate with at least five merit level passes.

In (i) and (ii) above, the credit/merit level passes must include English Language, Mathematics or Physics and any other 3 relevant subjects.

Technical/Technology Education Programme

Options:

i. Accounting

ii. Commerce & Cooperative

iii. Secretarial Technology

Candidates should possess any of the following:

  • Credit level passes in five (5) subjects at the Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSSC), NECO, NABTEB or any other equivalent at not more than two sittings.
  • Teachers Grade II certificate with at least five merit level passes.

In (i) and (ii) above, the credit/merit level passes must include English Language, Mathematics and any of the following; Principles of Accounts, Economics, Commerce, Office Practice, Business Methods, Shorthand, and Typewriting.

Library and Information Science Programmes

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

Same as the university admission requirements in every material detail. There are two modes of entry to the Bachelor of Library and Information Science Degree Programmes:

UTME Candidates (4 year degree programme): 

Credit passes in the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) or its equivalent in five (5) subjects at not more than 2 sittings in addition to acceptable pass in the University Matriculation Examination (UME).

Direct Entry Candidates (3 year degree programme): 

Any one of the following qualifications is admissible:

A pass at least at credit/merit level in a relevant Diploma Programme (provided the University’s English Language requirement has been satisfied).

English Language and Mathematics Requirements

In all cases, whether by Direct Entry or UME, credit in English Language.

A credit in English Language and a credit in Mathematics at the Senior Secondary School level or its equivalent are required.

 Faculty of Engineering

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS

O’level

All candidates must have five credit passes including English Language,  Mathematics and any other three subjects obtained at not more than two sittings.

Department of Electronics/Computer Engineering

Admission Requirements for undergraduate

a) Credit passes level in the following subjects

  1. English
  2. Mathematics
  3. Physics
  4. Chemistry and any other science subject obtained at not more than two sittings.

 b) UTME result, with qualifying cut off mark to be determined by Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

c) Post UTME result, with qualifying cut off mark to be determined by Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

Civil Engineering Programmes

ENGINEERING PROGRAM OUTCOMES

Engineering graduates from the department should achieve the skills and have the incentive to become registered professional engineers. The outcomes for the civil engineering programs are:

Graduates will achieve an appropriate level of technical competence in:

  1. Understanding basic scientific principles including calculus, differential equations, mechanics, properties of matter, and related topics.
  2. Using modern tools for engineering analysis including computers and sophisticated laboratory equipment.
  3. Approaching and solving engineering problems in a structured manner.
  4. Synthesizing knowledge form various sources to produce creative, cost-effective designs for civil engineering facilities and processes.
  5. Graduates of the engineering programme will also have an understanding of basic project management principles.

Graduates will be prepared for the engineering profession through:

  1. Knowledge of human relations.
  2. Recognition of the necessity to join and actively participate in professional Societies.
  3. A commitment to becoming registered as professional engineers.
  4. An ability to communicate effectively, both in written and oral forms, as well as an ability to listen.
  5. A sensitivity to and practice of personal and professional ethics.
  6. An ability to work effectively in teams.

Graduates will have an educated view of the world including:

  1. An understanding of the role and limitations of technology in addressing society’s problems.
  2. An exposure to the cultural, historical, and philosophical foundations of society.
  3. Knowledge of political and economic systems, particularly those that affect the planning, design, construction, and operation of the civil environment.
  4. A basic understanding of societal and environmental issues as they affect engineering decisions.

 Graduates will be prepared for lifelong education:

 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

UTME Candidates

Every student who wishes to pursue a degree offered in the Civil Engineering Department must be formally admitted to the department.

Students entering the university usually are admitted to the Engineering program when they have met the departments cut off point for the UME examination, have a minimum of five credits in five science courses in O’ level in the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or General Certificate of Education (GCE) or National Examination council (NECO) including Mathematics and English and also pass the university internal pre-entry examination.

Direct Entry Candidates

Candidates seeking Direct Entry admission to 200 level of the programmes should posses GCE ‘A’ Level in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry or Ordinary National Diploma from a recognize institution with lower credit, or a University Diploma in a science or Engineering based course at the Merit level, in addition to the matriculation requirements stated in (1) above.

Candidates with Higher national diplomas in relevant disciplines can be considered for direct entry as appropriate curriculum.  

Department of Industrial/Production Engineering

Admission Requirements

UTME Candidates (5 Years Programme)

In addition to the Minimum University entry requirements (i.e. five credits at O/L obtained at not more than two sittings); candidates for admission by UME into the five-year programme must have obtained credits in physics, mathematics, chemistry and English Language.

Direct Entry Candidates (4 Years Programme)

Candidates seeking direct entry admission into the first year of the four-year programme must satisfy the UME admission requirements and in addition possess at least an upper credit pass in OND, HND, NCE (Technical) or any other equivalent or higher certificate passed at credit level.

Mechanical Engineering Programmes

Degree Programme

The Department offers a five-year degree programme in Mechanical Engineering leading to the award of Bachelor of Engineering degree. The programme has been developed with NUC minimum academic requirements.

The courses in the first two years are common to all departments in the faculty and practice, Computer programming, engineering drawing, etc. the remaining programme is designed to provide students with enough basic engineering principles in mechanics of materials, fluid mechanics, machine design, engineering management, automatic controls etc.

A nine-month industrial attachment is mandatory for all third and fourth year students of this department. In the final year, a project, together with appropriate combination of courses is offered with an opportunity to select from list of elective courses.

Admission Requirement (B. ENG. PROGRAMME)

UTME Candidates (5 Years Programme)

In addition to the Minimum University entry requirements (i.e. five credits at O/L obtained at not more than two sittings): candidates for admission by UME into the five-year programme must have obtained credits in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English Language.

Direct Entry Candidates (4 Years Programme)

Candidates seeking direct entry admission into the first year of the four-year programme must satisfy the conditions stated above and in addition obtain at least four subjects in one sitting in GCE A/L.

The two subjects should be selected from the following: pure and applied mathematics. Pure mathematics, physics, chemistry and engineering drawing.

Direct Entry

Candidates will also be admitted into the four year programme if they satisfy the UME admission requirements and in addition possess at least a lower pass in OND, HND, NCE(Technical) or any other equivalent or higher certificate passed at credit level.

Department of Polymer/Textile Engineering

Basic Requirements for Undergraduate Programme

The Department of Polymer and Textile Engineering admits undergraduate students through University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), Direct Entry and the Pre-Science programme of the University following the minimum admission requirements for Undergraduate Programme in accordance with COREN and NUC Guidelines.

 Admission through University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)

UTME candidates are admitted into the 100 level of the degree programme subject to the under listed conditions:

  • They achieve not less than the approved UTME minimum score, which shall normally not be less than fifty percent of the maximum possible and the subject combination must be Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and the Use of English.

By the first day of October of the year of admission they possess at least one of the following:

(a)       The Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSSC) or the General Certificate of Education (ordinary level) or equivalent certificate with credit level passes in at least five subjects, including English language, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics obtained in not more than two sittings.

(b)       The Teachers Grade Two Certificate with credit or merit passes in at least five subjects including English language and Mathematics.

They satisfy any other Faculty/Department requirement(s) as approved by the University Senate.

Admission through Direct Entry

  • Applicants must meet the conditions specified in 1(ii) and 1(iii) above
  • Possess at least one of the following qualifications:
  • Obtain at least four subjects in one sitting in GCE A/L. The two GCE A/L subjects should be selected from the following: Pure and Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Engineering drawing.
  • a minimum of upper credit pass in OND in the relevant discipline;
  • a University degree or HND or its equivalent;
  • Any other qualification acceptable to the University Senate.

 Admission through Pre-Science

Candidates who successfully complete the University’s Pre-Science programme and who fulfill the under-listed conditions are offered admission:

  • Possess the Senior Secondary School Certificate or the General Certificate with passes at credit level in at least five subjects obtained in one or two sittings and including at least two science subjects chosen from:

Agricultural Science/Biology, Chemistry, Further Mathematics/Mathematics, Health Science, Home Economics/Home Management, Physics or any science subject(s) acceptable by the University Senate.

  • Pass the final examination in the Pre-Science programme with at least 200 marks and attain the cut-off mark of the department that year.
  • Scored at least 50% in the subject(s) required to remedy any deficiency in the Faculty/Departmental Entry requirements.
  • Have paid all the prescribed fees of the Pre-Science Unit.

Faculty of Health Science and Technology

Medical Lab Science 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Candidates seeking enrollment into the BMLS programme should possess the following minimum entry qualifications:

UTME Candidates

Candidates should possess at least 5 credits at ordinary level GCE or SSCE examination for at least not more than 2 sittings. The subjects include: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, and English Language. 

The student must also have performed well in joint admission matriculation board examination (UTME/JAMB). The university, if deemed necessary may conduct an additional examination. Preference shall be given to candidates with 5 credits at one sitting.

Direct Entry Candidates

(i)         Pass in general certificate of education or at advanced level in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (or Zoology) in addition to (1) above.

(ii)        Graduates of first degree in related sciences or its equivalent in addition to (1) one above (remedial result is not accepted). Such graduates with CGPA of 3.5 and above shall be deemed to be qualified.

(iii)       Candidates who have completed Part II examinations of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria and who have relevant qualifications as specified in 1 above may be considered for direct entry.

Radiography

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

There are two entry points into the Degree programme

Direct entry (4-Years programme) Requirement:

Possess first degree in relevant field and must possess 5 credits passes in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  Candidate for Direct Entry must passes at least 2’A level passes with minimum ‘C’ grade in physics and chemistry or biology, plus the above five credit at ‘O’ level.

Holders of National Diploma in Medical Image Processing Technician/X-Ray Technician program from Colleges of Health Technology recognised by RRBN.

JAMB (5 years programme)

  • Person from 16 years and above
  • Pass UME and appropriate score during Post UME screening test
  • Must possess 5 credits passes: in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Admission may be offered to student transferring from other relevant departments who met stipulated criteria of entry into the programme. 

A minimum of 3.50 CGPA on a 5 point scale or 2.80 on a 4 point Scale is required to be accepted into the programme from other relevant departments with the minimum entry requirement.

Programme structure  includes period of formal studies in the Universities industrial training.

Planned visit and projects: ( DURATION OF COURSE)

The period spent in the course is five academic sessions which include period of formal studies, clinical posting and project.  We have two phases in the programme.

  1. Pre-clinical phase
  2. Clinical phase

The pre-clinical phase is part one and part two of the programme.  Some of the courses covered are Biology, Chemistry, Physics, General Studies Anatomy, Human Physiology and Biochemistry.

Clinical phase is from part three to part five.  The courses covered are basic Medical Imaging, Pharmacology and Radiobiology, Pathology and Clinical Posting in Radiology Radiation Medicine , Radiation Protection, Dosimetry, Electronics and Computer in Radiology, Equipment, Radiotherapy & Oncology, Research, Methodology & Biostatics, Seminar presentation and Radiographic  Technique & Photography. 

The students are encouraged to spend their long vacation period at Radiology centres outside the primary training hospital like National Hospital Abuja, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, University of Jos Teaching Hospital, University College Hospital, National Orthopedic Hospital, Lagos etc. to encourage wider exposure.

DURATION OF THE COURSE

The program may take a period of five years leading to the award of a Bachelors of Science in Radiography and Radiological Sciences (B.Sc. RAD), 2 years pre-clinical and 3 years clinical.

MODE OF STUDY

Candidates are required to register as full-time students. No part time registration is allowed.

Environmental Health Science

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

(i) UTME Candidates

Candidates may be considered for admission to 100 level (B.EHS) Degree programme after passing at the required level, the UME Examination of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), provided they obtain West African School Certificate (WASC), National Examination Council (NECO) or the General Certificate of Education (SSCE/GCE) at a minimum of credit level in five subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Health Science taken and passed at not more than two sittings.

 (ii) Direct Entry Candidates

(a) In addition to the O’Level requirements stipulated above, applicants should possess at least two A’ Level papers in relevant subjects

(b) OND/HND in relevant discipline with at least upper credit grade in addition to the five credit passes as in 2.1 (a) above.

(c) A candidate who fulfills normal O’Level admission requirements and in addition holds an ND or HND certificates (minimum upper credit) in the Royal Society of Health Dip RSH or West Africa Health Examination Board (WAHEB) Diploma for Public Health Superintendents/Health Technologists, National Diploma (ND) (Upper Credit) in Environmental Health Sciences.

(d) Good pass (not less than 3.50 CGPA) in Environmental Health Science Diploma of Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

 Professional Indexing:

All students admitted into the environmental health science programme shall be indexed by the Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria (EHORECON) before the first semester of their third (300 level) in the programme.

Faculty of Law

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the Law Faculty, a candidate must have credit level passes in at least five subjects at either the West African School Certificate (WASC) examination or the General Certificate of Education (GCE) examination at ordinary level, or the Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSSC) examination, (or the equivalent) obtained in not more than two sittings.

These subjects must include English Language, English Literature, Mathematics or a Science subject, taken from Physics, Biology, Chemistry or Agricultural Science.

In addition, the candidate must either-

Pass the University Tertiary and Matriculation Examination (UTME) or

Hold a Degree, Diploma, HND, or NCE from a recognized institution or credit level passes in 3 subjects at GCE “A” level.

Candidates who qualify by alternative (a) that is via UTME are admitted to the full five-year course. Those who qualify by alternative (b) that is holders of Degrees, HND, etc. are admitted into year two, of the programme, and run a four-year course.

Competition for places in law is intense throughout the country and possession of any of the above basic qualifications does not necessarily ensure entry. Admissions are based on merits and the National Universities’ Commission/ Council of legal Education admission quota.

Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science

Department Of Pharmacognosy And Traditional Medicine

A)  Full-Time Bachelor Of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) Programme.

Admission Requirements

Regular undergraduate students are admitted into the programme through University Matriculation Examination (UME), Direct Entry and JUPEB

Minimum of five (5) O’ LEVEL credits to include: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology obtained in not more than two sittings.

Department of Pharmaceutical Technology

A) Full-Time Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) Programme.

Admission Requirements

Regular undergraduate students are admitted into the programme through University Matriculation Examination (UME), Direct Entry and JUPEB

Minimum of five (5) O’ LEVEL credits to include: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology obtained in not more than two sittings.

Department of Clinical Pharmacy

A)  Full-Time Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) Programme.

Admission Requirements

Regular undergraduate students are admitted into the programme through University Matriculation Examination (UME), Direct Entry and JUPEB

Minimum of five (5) O’ LEVEL credits to include: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology obtained in not more than two sittings.

Department of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry

A)  Full-Time Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) Programme.

Admission Requirements

Regular undergraduate students are admitted into the programme through University Matriculation Examination (UME), Direct Entry and JUPEB

Minimum of five (5) O’ LEVEL credits to include: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology obtained in not more than two sittings.

Department of Microbiology And Biotechnology

A)  Full-Time Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) Programme.

Admission Requirements

Regular undergraduate students are admitted into the programme through University Matriculation Examination (UME), Direct Entry and JUPEB

Minimum of five (5) O’ LEVEL credits to include: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology obtained in not more than two sittings.

Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology

A) Full-Time Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) Programme.

Admission Requirements

Regular undergraduate students are admitted into the programme through University Matriculation Examination (UME), Direct Entry and JUPEB

Minimum of five (5) O’ LEVEL credits to include: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology obtained in not more than two sittings.

Faculty of Physical Science

Mathematics

General Admission Requirements

Entry into the undergraduate year one of the Mathematics programme requires either:

  1. Successful completion of the Pre-science programme of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka; or
  2. Attainment of a minimum score (determined yearly by the University) in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (in English, Chemistry/Economics, Math, Physics)
  3. And subsequent attainment of minimum scores of post U.T.M.E examination organized by the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka.

In addition to requirements (1-3) above candidate shall have the following qualifications outlined in the Table below:
