What is Erasmus Mundus Scholarship?
Erasmus Mundus Scholarships are high-level and integrated study programmes, at master level. The programmes are designed and delivered by an International partnership of Higher Education Institutions (HEI).
They involve at least three HEI from three different countries, of which at least two must be EU Member States and third countries associated to the Programme (previously called Programme Countries).
By supporting these jointly recognised Master degrees, the European Union aims at ensuring excellence and incorporation of the participating institutions. There are also scholarships for students to take part in these prestigious programmes; the masters themselves offer them to the best-ranked applicants worldwide.
The Erasmus Mundus Scholarships cover the cost of a student’s participation in the programme, travel and a living allowance.
Activities and outcomes
The programme covers the period of your study, research, placement activities, thesis preparation and defence, in line with the requirement of the joint Master. The latter comprises at least 2 study periods in 2 countries, which must be different from your country of residence. Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters offer different study tracks to meet this condition.
Duration of the masters: 1 to 2 academic years (60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits).
Type of degree awarded: Either a joint degree (i.e. one single degree certificate issued on behalf of at least two higher education institutions) or multiple degrees (i.e. at least two degree certificates issued by two higher education institutions of the consortium).
Requirements for Erasmus Mundus Scholarships

The Erasmus Mundus Scholarships GLOCAL is a 2-year full-time postgraduate programme. Applicants are expected to make only one choice of study track from 7 different options. Each of the 7 tracks have their respective academic requirements that applicant must possess before it a choice.

English Language Requirements
For applicants whose first language is not English, the University sets a minimum English Language proficiency level.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic module (not General Training):
• overall score 6.5
• no sub-test less than 6.0
Another common equivalent English language qualification:
All stated English tests are acceptable for admission for both
home/EU and international students for this programme.
• ibTOEFL: 90 overall with a minimum of 20 for reading, 19 for listening, 19 for speaking and 23 for writing
• CAE (Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English): 176 overall; no sub-test less than 169
• CPE (Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English): 176 overall; no sub-test less than 169
• PTE Academic (Person Test of English, Academic test): 60 overall; no sub-test less than 59
• Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English: ISEII at Distinction with Distinction in all sub-tests
For international students, the Home Office has confirmed that the
University can choose to use these tests to make its own assessment
of English language ability for visa applications to degree level
programmes.
The University is also able to accept an IELTS test (Academic module) from any of the 1000 IELTS test centres around the world, and we do not require a specific UKVI IELTS test for degree level programmes. We therefore still accept any of the English tests listed for admission to this programme.
Pre-sessional courses:
The University of Glasgow accepts evidence of the required language
level from the English for Academic Study Unit Pre-sessional courses.

Documents Required For Application of Erasmus Mundus Scholarship
Applicants of the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship are mandated to submit the following documents on the process of their application:
- Degree certificate (and an official translation into English
- Official academic transcript(s) (and an official translation into English), showing full details of subjects studied and grades/marks obtained.
- Two supporting reference letters on headed paper.
- References must be dated within 24 months from the date of submission of the application
- They must be on institutional headed paper or with an official stamp. If neither are available a reference can be submitted directly to [email protected] from the referee’s institutional email address.
- References will not be accepted from a personal email address.
- References must be signed with an electronic or wet-ink signature. A typed name is not sufficient
- At least one of the two references should be an academic reference. One may be a professional reference where it is not possible to obtain two academic references.
- English language proficiency.
- A scan of the photo page of your passport.
- CV (Europass format preferred, but not mandatory).

- Separate personal statement (for self-funded applicants only).
Please note, in order to be considered for a scholarship for entry in September 2023, you MUST have submitted ALL of the above documents by 6th January 2023.
If your application status is ‘holding for documents’, then you will NOT be considered for a scholarship unless you submit the required documents by 6th January 2023. The only exception to this is English language proficiency certificates, final degree certificates and transcripts where an applicant is still currently studying.
Note on Conditional offers:
If you are completing the final year of your first degree or you have yet to provide the required evidence of proficiency in English, your application for entry will be considered but you will not receive an Unconditional offer of a place on the programme until we have received your final degree and/or English language test results.
In such cases you may be made a Conditional offer on finishing your degree at the required grade and/or obtaining the required English language test results.
You will not be able to enroll on the GLOCAL programme until all required documents have been received and you have accepted an Unconditional offer.

Step 4 – Erasmus Mundus Scholarship Application Form
This contains the Personal Statement section, which is your space to tell the Consortium why you want to study GLOCAL and what your background and experience can bring to the Programme. All applicants including those applying as self-funding students must complete this.
1) Work out if you are a Programme Country or Partner Country applicant (see here for definition of Programme and Partner Country: Programme Partner countries)
Please note: nationals of a Partner Country who have spent 12 months or more in any Programme country/countries in the last five years preceding the scholarship application deadline must apply as a Programme Country applicant.
2) Complete, sign and upload (as a PDF) the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship application form – 2023 entry.
Before submitting the scholarship application form, make sure you have CLEARLY indicated which study track you are choosing, and that your Personal Statement indicates why your background and experience fit within GLOCAL.
Step 5 – Check & Upload
All applications must be submitted through the University of Glasgow’s online application system here. All applications are made online and all supporting documents must be uploaded to your online application.
Make sure that you have uploaded all required documents before submitting your online application.
Please note: Erasmus Mundus do not accept any applications or supporting documents via email. If your offer status is ‘holding for documents’, then you will NOT be considered for a scholarship unless you submit the required documents by 6 January 2023.
IMPORTANT: final degree certificates
You do NOT need to have your final degree certificate or English test results at the time of submitting your application – these can be uploaded later. If you are completing the final year of your first degree or you have yet to provide the required evidence of proficiency in English, you will be considered for entry to the GLOCAL programme but will not receive an Unconditional offer until we have received your final degree and/or English language test results.
In such cases you may be made an offer which is Conditional on you finishing your degree at the required grade and/or obtaining the required English language test results.
This documentation must be submitted before you can enrol on the GLOCAL programme.

Click “Submit” at the end of your online application. You will receive a confirmation email containing your login details and applicant/student number – this is confirmation that your application was submitted successfully.

How Much is Erasmus Mundus Scholarship – GLOCAL?
The Erasmus Mundus Scholarship – GLOCAL is a fully funded International scholarship. It covers the following contributions and supports:
- a contribution to the student participation costs (tuition fees, full insurance coverage and any other mandatory participation costs)
- a contribution to student travel and installation costs
- a monthly subsistence allowance for the entire duration of the study programme
| Contribution to the participation costs | The tuition fee will be fully covered by the scholarship contribution and the Consortium. 4,500 € per year for a Programme Country scholarship holder. 9,000 € per year for a Partner Country scholarship holder. Any amount in excess of these contributions will be covered by the GLOCAL Consortium and will not be charged to the scholarship holder. |
| Contribution to the travel and installation costs | For residents of a Programme Country: 1,000 € per year. The contribution to travel and installation costs and contribution to subsistence costs takes into account only the residence (as determined above, at 6th January 2023) of the scholarship holder regardless of the category under which the student has applied.
General Principles and Regulation of Erasmus Mundus Scholarship
The following are the general principles and Regulations guiding Erasmus Mundus Scholarships and their recipients:
- EMJMD student scholarships cover the entire duration of the Master course and are awarded exclusively for full-time enrolment in the course. Scholarship candidates must have already obtained a first higher education degree or demonstrate a recognised equivalent level of learning according to national rules and legislation in place.
- Candidates who will only obtain their first higher education degree at the end of the academic year preceding the EMJMD intake can nevertheless apply for a scholarship and can be selected by the consortium, under the condition that the student obtains the required degree prior to the beginning of the Master course.
- Students who are former Action 1 Erasmus Mundus Master/Doctoral Course scholarship holders are not eligible for an additional EMJMD scholarship. Successful applicants cannot benefit from another EU grant while pursuing the EMJMD scholarship studies.
- EMJMD scholarship holders must spend at least two complete mobility periods in at least two of the consortium’s full HEI partners which are located in different Programme Countries. Each of these mandatory mobility periods must include a volume of study/research or equivalent corresponding to at least 30 ECTS.
- The mandatory mobility periods cannot be replaced by virtual mobility, unless explicitly authorised by the EACEA due to the COVID-19 pandemic, neither can they take place in institutions outside the consortium.
- Additional study/research/thesis preparation/placement periods can take place in other participating organisations in the consortium (partner and associated partner) under the condition that the activities concerned are implemented under the direct supervision of the consortium partner.
- Contribution to subsistence costs will not be given to scholarship holders from a Partner country for periods exceeding three months of the EMJMD spent in any Partner country.
- Contribution to subsistence costs will not be given to scholarship holders for periods of the EMJMD spent in their country of residence.

How Competitive is Erasmus Mundus Scholarship
The Erasmus Mundus Scholarship is highly competitive one as so many applications are received from students from all walks of life. From statistics, it was revealed not more than 5.5% of the total applicants are usually successful at the end of the selection processes.
