About Micheal Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU)  

Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU), formerly known as Federal University of Agriculture, Umudike, came into existence as a specialized University by the Federal Government of Nigeria through Decree No 48 of 2nd November 1992

The Institution is located in Umidike, Abia State, a notable Agricultural Training and Research town in the South Eastern part of Nigeria, about 9 kilometers from Umuahia town, the capital of Abia State.

The major link road to the University is the Umuahia – Ikot Ekpene Federal Road, a direct route to the State capitals of Abia, Akwa – Ibom, and Cross River. Being close to Umuahia, the University is linked through a major North-South Express Road to most parts of the country.

It started its academic activities at the premises of the former Federal College of Agriculture, Umudike currently recgnised as the Federal College of Agriculture which has been moved to Ishiagu, Ebonyi state.

MOUAU effectively took off on May 3, 1993, when the University admitted its foundational students.

The University is made up of about eleven colleges with fifty departments, two schools and sixteen directorates.

Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU) is envisioned to be a University par excellence and hopes to help the peoples of Nigeria and beyond through the provision of practical knowledge for agricultural transformation in order to achieve sustainable food production.

GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

The general admission requirements for any candidate seekin admission into Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU) undergraduate programmes are as follow:

  • The minimum age for admission is 16 years
  • Students are admitted into the University degree programmes through a competitive entrance examination (Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination -UTME) organized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
  • A candidate must in addition have an acceptable score in the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Examination or a Diploma, NCE with at least lower credit.
  • The candidate should at least possess a minimum of 5 credit passes at the SSCE or equivalent obtained at not more than 2 sittings in relevant subjects including English and Mathematics.
  • The B. Agriculture programme, requires five credit passes in SSCE/WASC/GCE ‘O’ Level which must include Chemistry, Biology/ Agricultural Science, Mathematics, Physics and English Language. 
  • However, every applicant must have attempted Physics and Mathematics at WASC/SSCE/GCE O’ Level. 
  • The exact requirements of different programmes which may be modified from time to time by the university Senate could be obtained from the University Registry as well as JAMB’s information publications for potential students.

TRANSFER CANDIDATES

Candidates who wish to transfer from other universities into the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, are required to:

  • Purchase and complete the prescribed application form obtainable from the University Registry at Umudike.
  • Posses the minimum entry requirements for admission into the university as well as the special requirements of the proposed Department/ programme.
  • Ensure that their academic transcripts and special reports on them (forwarded by appropriate officials of their former institutions) are received in the admission office of the University.

CHANGE OF COURSE/DEPARTMENT

In a case where an admitted student could not meet the criteria of a department as a result, such student can be changed to a new department provided he/she meets the criteria of the other department.

PROBATION AND WITHDRAWALS

Any student whose Cumulative Grade Point Average (C.G.P.A.) is below 1.00 at the end of any academic year is placed on probation for one academic year during which he/she is expected to repeat and pass the failed courses.

If at the end of a period of probation, the student still fails to make the required C.G.P.A. of 1.00, he/she will be required to withdraw from the University for one academic year after which he/she may apply for readmission. Readmission in this case is not automatic.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENT FOR UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

Before any student can be awarded with a bachelor’s degree in undergraduate programme, there certain requirements that such person must fulfill. They include the following:

  • A student must have taken and passed a minimum of one hundred and twenty (120) credit unit courses for a four – year, one hundred and fifty (150) credit unit courses for a five – year, and one hundred and eighty (180) credit unit courses for a six – year programme.
  • In each case, the student must obtain a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 1.00 (2.00 required for Doctor in Veterinary medicine). Most programmes in the University however have a minimum credit load requirement of about 144-168; 180-210 and 216-252 for four, five and six year course duration respectively.

MOUAU DIRECT ENTRY ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the O’ level requirements, Direct Entry candidates seeking admission into the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU) should also possess any of the following requirements:

I. OND/ND (Distinction)

ii. HND (Credit)

iii. NCE (Double Major) at Credit Level

iv. OND/ND (Credit)

v. NCE (Double Major/Merit Level)

Candidates with qualifications as in (i), (ii) and (iii) as listed above may be admitted into the 200 level while those as in (iv) or (v) may be admitted into the 100 level. 

Holders of the ND with a minimum of upper credit passes in addition to O level credit passes are normally admitted into the 200 level of the programme while holders of HND certificates may be admitted into the 300 level except for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine programme.

The degree duration shown for most programmes is for UME candidates. Candidates with ND and HND or their equivalents spend fewer years in their programmes (as stated above), e.g. four or three years, respectively, in the B. Agric. compared to five years for UME candidates.
