Accounting Courses in North-West University

The North-West University offers programmes designed for students who wish to become Chartered Accountants, Professional Accountants or Management Accountants on three campuses, namely the Mahikeng Campus situated in Mahikeng, the Potchefstroom campus and the Vanderbijlpark Campus situated in Vanderbijlpark. North-West University General Admission Requirements

To get admission into the North-West University, South Africa, you have to at least possess the general admission requirements in addition to the departmental admission requirements. This section is all about the general qualifications for admission consideration into different programmes offered in NWU.

Higher Certificate:

The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution as certified by Umalusi, the Quality Assurance Council. Institutional and programme needs may require additional combinations or recognised NSC subjects and levels of achievement.

Diploma: 

The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution as certified by Umalusi, the Quality Assurance Council, coupled with an achievement rating of 3 (Moderate Achievement, 40% – 49%) or better in four (4) recognised 20-credit subjects. Institution and programme needs may require additional combinations of recognised NSC subjects and levels of achievement.

Bachelor’s Degree

The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution as certified by Umalusi, the Quality Assurance Council, coupled with an achievement rating of 4 (Adequate Achievement, 50% – 59%) or better in four (4) recognised 20-credit subjects. Master’s Degree (MSc/MCom)

The Master’s degree programme is demanding from both an academic and time perspective and should not be entered into lightly. To be admitted to the Magister Comercii (MCom) or the Magister Scientiae (MSc) programme at the North-West University, you will need the following:

  • A BA Honours, BSc Honours or BCom Honours degree (or a qualification that has the status of a BA Honours, BSc Honours or BCom Honours degree approved by the Senate). The study content of the honours degree must be to the satisfaction of the Research Committee.
  • A minimum average of 65% in your Honours degree (or equivalent four-year degree).
  • A minimum average of 65% in the Honours degree (or fourth year degree level) modules on which your intended studies are to be based.
  • Strong research capabilities. Since the MCom and the MSc is primarily a research-based degree, your research capabilities must be demonstrated to the satisfaction of the Research Committee.
  • A completed focused research outline to aid the assessment committee in pairing you with a supervisor working in your intended field of study.
  • A satisfactory research proposal.
  • A good knowledge of econometrics or other modelling/statistical techniques.

Owing to the popularity and highly competitive nature of the MCom and the MSc programmes, all applications will undergo a thorough review process. Even if you meet the minimum entry requirements, you may not be admitted to the programme as the Research Committee reserves the right to take only a select number of applicants.

PhD Programmes:

A PhD is designed to make new and original contributions to the discipline of Economics or International Trade. Students therefore need to be academically strong and disciplined, capable of working on their own and highly motivated. To be admitted to the Doctor Philosophiae (PhD) programme at the North-West University, you will need the following:

  • An applicable Master’s degree (or a qualification that has the status of a Master’s degree, as approved by the Senate). The study content of the Master’s degree must be to the satisfaction of the Research Committee.

How To Apply To Study In North-West University

Application for admission in the North-West University, South Africa is done online by following the steps that I am going to show you below:

Step 1: Get your university number

  • Go to the online application platform
  • Click on Application Login, it will open the Login screen
  • Click on Create new student number and complete all the fields.

If you already have a university number, log into the portal using your details.

Please note that the allocation of a student number does not mean that you have completed the application process. Go through all the steps to ensure that your application is complete and submit it so that it reaches us. Incomplete applications will not be processed by the University.

Step 2: Log in

When you receive a student number, use that together with the PIN number you created to log in. Keep your student number and PIN safe. You’ll need it in the future.

Step 3: What do you want to study?

Complete all the fields. Use the yearbooks to obtain more information about the qualifications, modes of delivery and curricula.

Explore careers based on your interests with the Interest-Index.

Step 4: Upload supporting documents

Undergraduate students

To consider your application, please upload the following supporting documents. If the application is incomplete, it may be declined by the University:

  • Grade 12 results, grade 11 results (final results only) or a copy of your matric certificate – if you have already passed matric.
  • Applicants who are currently upgrading their grade 12 results, will only be considered after the improved results are presented to the NWU.
  • Applicants who follow Cambridge, GED or any other non-NSC curriculum, or who may qualify for exemption based on advanced age or post-school qualifications, must provide an exemption certificate as issued by USAF.
  • Copy of your ID
  • Copy of your academic record (if applicable).
  • Additional documents for international prospective students:
    • A copy of relevant results
    • A copy of your passport
    • More information on payable fees

Postgraduate students

  • Copy of your ID
