National Essay Competition – UBA Foundation
The National Essay Competition is UBA Foundation’s annual education initiative. It is aimed at promoting the reading culture and encouraging healthy and intellectual competition amongst secondary school students in Nigeria and across Africa.
Eligibility for the Application and Selection Criteria
To qualify for this competition, the applicant:
– Must be a secondary school student
– Must submit a scanned copy of your handwritten essay (750 words MAX)
– Must submit a passport photograph
– Must submit a copy of a birth certificate, National ID or Passport

Nigeria
What are needed for the Application?
- Applicant must submit their valid contact information (Name, Age, School, Address of school, Telephone Number, Residential Address, and Email Address).
- Applicants must upload a scanned copy of their original birth certificates or international passport data page.
- Applicants must upload a handwritten essay on the portal.
Selection Procedure
Entries received for the competition will be reviewed by a distinguished panel of judges made up of professors from reputable Nigerian Universities, who will then shortlist 12 essays for further assessment
Following this, a second round of competition will involve the 12 finalists who will write a second supervised essay from which three best essays will be selected as the overall winners from the 12 finalists emerged from the first round of the competition.
Awards for UBA National Essay Competition Winners
At the end of all the assessments, competitors who emerges the first three winners shall be rewarded as follow:
- The first prize for the UBA National Essay Competition is a N5,000,000 (Five Million Naira) educational grant to any African University of their choice.
- The second prize is N3,000,000 (Three Million Naira) educational grants to African Universities.
- While the third prize is N2,500,000 (Two Million Five Hundred Thousand Naira) educational grant to any African University of choice.

“ASUU Strikes have often cost Nigerian students time. Advise the Nigerian government on how they can reach an agreement with ASUU to improve tertiary education in the country.”
