UNN Admission Requirements for the Entire Department
To qualify for undergraduate admission into any of the available courses in the University of Nigeria, Nsuka (UNN), there are certain requirements that you must possess.
In this section of the article, I present to you all the admission requirements for all the faculties and departments, both for the direct entry candidates and the UTME candidates.
Faculty of Agriculture
(Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Extension, Animal Science, Crop Science and Soil Science)
Direct Entry Requirements
Two A’ level passes (London/Cambridge/Cameroon) in Chemistry and any of Biology/Botany/Zoology/Agricultural Science, Economics, Physics, Geography/Geology, Mathematics (Pure & Applied) in addition to UTME entry requirement.
ii. OND, NCE, HND and Degree in Agricultural Science/Animal Health and related fields with a minimum of Lower Credit (Merit) in addition to UTME Entry requirement.
UTME Requirements
Five O’ level credit passes in subjects which must include English Language, Biology/Agricultural Science, Chemistry and either Mathematics or Physics
Home Science
Direct Entry Requirements
The same as in Agricultural Economics
UTME Requirements
In addition to the UTME/General University Entry requirements, a candidate must obtain credit passes in Chemistry, Biology or Food and Nutrition or Agricultural Science
Nutrition and Dietetics
Direct Entry Requirements
The candidate should have passes at the Principal levels in the Higher School Certificate Examination or equivalent passes at GCE Advanced Level in two of the following subjects: Chemistry, Biology (Botany and/or Zoology), Agricultural Science, Physics or Mathematics.
OND, NCE, HND in Nutrition in and Dietetics/Home Economics/Agricultural Science, Food Science plus UTME entry requirements into 2 or 3 hundred levels.
Certificate in Nursing or approved Diploma/NCE in relevant subjects. Candidate must also satisfy the UTME entry requirement.
UTME Requirements
In addition to the UTME/University general entry requirements, candidates must have obtained credits in the O/L subjects which must include Chemistry, Biology or Food and Nutrition or Agricultural Science and Physics or Mathematics
Food Science and Technology
Direct Entry Requirements
Two “A” level passes in Biology/Botany/Zoology/Agricultural Science, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics, in addition to UME entry requirements.
UTME Requirements
Five “O” level credit Passes in English Language, Biology or Agricultural Science, Chemistry Mathematics and Physics.
Faculty of Arts
General Admission Requirements for Faculty of Arts
Candidates enter the department either for a four year or a three year programme:
A. Four Year Programme
Candidates coming into the four-year programme must have obtained five Credits including English Language and any science subject as well as a Pass in Mathematics at WASC or GCE O/L or its equivalent.
B. Three Year Programme
Candidates coming into three year programme must have passed two papers in Higher School Certificate or GCE A/L and have the minimum entry requirements of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka including a credit in English Language and a pass in Mathematics at WASC or GCE O/L or its equivalent.
Holders of Diploma or NCE recognized by University of Nigeria also qualify for Direct Entry.
Students combining Archaeology with Science or the Social Sciences must satisfy the requirements in the respective faculties.
Faculty of Biological Science
Entry Requirements:
For the Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry, the courses offered extend over a period of three years for direct-entry students, and four years for students who gain admission through the entrance examination.
Direct-entry candidates are required to have obtained the General certificate of Education at Advanced level, or the higher School Certificate at Principal Level, in Chemistry and Biology, or Plant Science and Biotechnology or Zoology and Environmental Biology plus credits in either Mathematics or Physics in the West African School Certificate, or its equivalent.
Entrance examination candidates must have passed at credit level in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English Language and Mathematics in the West African School Certificate, or its equivalent.
Students from other departments who wish to take courses in Biology, Chemistry and Elementary Mathematics in the West African School Certificate, or attained a similar standard at an equivalent examination.
Candidates with the following diploma certificates may be considered for admission by direct entry: The Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE); three-year diploma of College of technology and Polytechnics (HND) and the Interim joint Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination (Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria).

Admission is done under two modes: UTME and Direct Entry.
UTME Requirements
Candidates who have satisfied the general University requirements for admission and who have passed any five teaching subjects at credit level in at least two sittings in Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE), or West African School Certificate Examination (WASCE) or General Certificate in Education (GCE) or National Examination Council (NECO) or their equivalence are qualified to be admitted into a four year degree programme.
Direct Entry (DE)
Candidates with at least a minimum of merit grade at the Nigerian Certificate of Education (NCE), Diploma Certificate in Education, Music, Religion, Adult Education, Health Education, Social Science Education or Science Education are qualified t be admitted into a three year degree programme.

(b) Pass at upper credit HND examination in Electrical Engineering from recognized Polytechnics

Faculty of Law
The Faculty admits students of two broad categories:
(i) U.M.E. candidates
(ii) Direct Entry candidates
Students are admitted into the respective programmes if they satisfy the general university admission requirements for direct entry and entrance examination students.
In addition, all students (including direct entry candidates) must satisfy the Faculty entry requirements of Credit level passes in English Language, English Literature and a Science subject in School Certificate or its equivalent.
Faculty of Medicine
General Admission Requirements
Below are the requirements for candidates that wish to gain admission into University Of Nigeria through JAMB To Study Medicine And Surgery.
- For a start, you need to have at least 5 credit passes in your O’level result (WAEC and NECO) including English and Mathematics not more than two (2) sittings before you can study Medicine And Surgery in UNN.
- You must have reached the AGE of sixteen (16) by the 31st day of October in the year of admission.
- You must meet UNN Medicine And Surgery Cut off Mark.
- Choose Correct JAMB Subject Combination.
- Have a good JAMB, WAEC, Post UTME Score.
Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science
The following categories of applicants qualify for admission into:
FIVE YEARS PROGRAMME:
By UME (JAMB)
Candidates seeking admission to the five-year programme by UME are required to possess credit in English Language, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Biology in the West African School Certificate or its equivalent, in addition to the minimum University requirement prior to admission.
FOUR YEARS PROGRAMME:
By Direct Entry (JAMB)
Direct entry students seeking admission to the four-year programme must have a pass in Chemistry and Physics plus Biology or Botany or Zoology at the Higher School Certificate (Principal Level) with credit in English Language and Mathematics in the West African School Certificate or its equivalent.
The passes at the Advanced level should have been obtained at not more than two sittings. The Faculty also admits degree holders from related disciplines as stipulated in each year’s Direct Entry prospective, provided they have also the requisite University Matriculation Examination requirements
Faculty of Social Science
University of Nigeria, Nsukka requires all candidates applying for admission into any of its courses to possess five credit level passes which must include a credit pass in English language and a science subject in not more than two sittings .
Entry requirement for Direct Entry must include UME requirement for the particular courses.
Economics
Direct Entry Requirements
Two A level passes in Economics and any one of Mathematics, Statistic, Geography, physics, chemistry Agricsc, Accountancy, Business management, History, Government.
UTME Requirements
Five O Level credit passes in English language, Mathematics, Economics and any other relevant subject at WASC or GCE O level
UTME SUBJECTS
Economics, Mathematics and any of Govt. History, Geography, English Literature, French and C R k.
Combine Social Sciences
Direct Entry Requirements
Two A Level passes in subject to be combine and where the combination does not exist at A level, these candidates must possess two A level passes in related subjects(see various departmental requirements).
Recognize diploma from recognize institute with at least merit/lower credit level in the subject to be combined.
UTME Requirements
Five O level credit passes to include English language and the subject to be combined.
UTME Subject
English language and any other three subjects.
Geography
Direct Entry Requirements
Two A level passes in Geography and anyone of Economics, History, AgricSc, Geology, Lit in English, Biology, Chemistry, or physics.
NCE in Geography at merit level, OND with at least merit level, lower credit level pass in town planning, Surveying, Environmental Management or Tropical Sciences, plus four O level passes which include credit in English language and at least a pass in Mathematics.
UTME Requirements
Five O level credit passes to including English language Geography and any three from Art or Social science subject and at least a pass in Mathematics.
UTME Subject
Geography and any other two subjects preferably Arts or Social Science subject.
Special Consideration
Holders of Diploma in Environmental protection from UNN without O level Geography are admitted
Political Science
Direct Entry
Two A passes to include Government or History
UNN diploma in public
UTME
Five O level credit passes which include English
UTME Subject
Government or History plus two other Arts or Social sciences
Social Work
Direct Entry Requirements
Two A level passes plus UME requirements
Two years Diploma in Social Work approved by the university of Nigeria Nsukka with a minimum of merit pass and UME requirement.
Two A level passes including Government or History plus UME requirements.
Two year Diploma and Administration with at least a merit pass plus UME requirements.
UTME Requirements
Five O level credits passes which include English language, Government or History any three Arts or social science subjects.
UTME Subject
English language and three social science or Arts subject.
Public Administration and Local Government
Direct Entry Requirements
3 year program (Direct Entry) candidates to possess one of the following qualifications:
1: Two GCE (A/L) passes or its equivalent in any of the following subject: Government, History, Economics, Business Management, Accounting and Geography plus UME requirement.
2: OND from recognize institutions in law, secretarial studies or its Equivalent at merit level plus UME requirement.
3:Diploma in public Administration and social work of the university of Nigeria or Higher National Diploma of recognize institutions with a minimum of merit /lower credit level pass plus UME requirement.
UTME Requirements
UNN minimum entry requirement plus credit level pass in English language, Government or History and Mathematics at SSCE or GCE O level.
UTME Subject
Government or History plus two other subjects from Social sciences or Arts.
Special Consideration
Possession of Government is not a pre-requisite for 3-year direct entry candidates.

UNN diploma in public Administration at merit level plus four credit which includes English language, Government or History and at least a pass in mathematics.
UTME Requirements
Include English language, government or History and three other subjects and at least a pass in mathematics.
Other Arts or social science subject
Philosophy
Direct Entry Requirements
(1) Any two A level passes plus UME requirements
(ii) two year Diploma plus UME requirements.
(iii) Registration nurse certificate plus credit in Biology Health science and at least a pass in mathematics or statistics plus UME requirement.

Five O level credit passes which include English language, Biology, Health Science and at least a pass in mathematics or statistics.

Special Considerations
UME subjects: UNN does not accept Agric science. DE into computer science is 4 years but for combined courses is 3 years
Pure and Industrial Chemistry
Direct Entry Requirements
Two A’ level passes in chemistry and any one of physics and mathematics plus UME requirement
UTME Requirements
Five O’level passes in English language Mathematics, physics
UTME Subjects
Chemistry and two of Physics Biology and Mathematics.
Faculty of Veterinary Medicine
Admission Requirements
UME Entry Requirements: Prospective candidates must satisfy both the University minimum entry and specified Faculty requirements.
The Faculty specifically requires that a candidate must have passed Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics at credit level in Senior Secondary School Certificate, GCE O/L or in an equivalent examination with credit in English.
The subjects to be taken in UME are Biology, Chemistry, English Language, and Physics

Direct Entry Requirements: Candidates must have passes at GCE A/L or HSC or an equivalent examination in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics in addition to credit in Mathematics in SCE or GCE O/L or an equivalent examination.
Holders of Higher Diploma in Animal Health and Husbandry at least merit level of the University of Nigeria or other equivalent Diploma, plus credit in Physics and a pass in Mathematics in GCE O/L or its equivalent are also eligible for Direct Entry Admission.
Candidates with good University degree with a minimum of second class honours lower division in relevant science areas, plus basic entry requirement are eligible for direct entry admission.
